COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long will it take?

Length of time varies from person to person and from problem to problem. For many disorders, such as mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety, useful strategies can be shared in six to eight sessions or less. Consistently using strategies introduced in therapy session can expedite therapy.

Do I have to talk about my childhood?

If you want to and if it’s useful, but the emphasis is on the problems existing in the here and now and how to solve them.

Does it work?

Like they say in Alcoholics Anonymous: It works if you work it.

What happens?

We sit and talk. We get to know each other. I take a history and check current status. Then we identify a problem or problems. We agree on desired outcomes and devise strategies to achieve them.

Why can’t I just fix myself?

You will or you won’t, with or without therapy, but facilitating the fixing is my job. If you’ve tried a lot of things that helped a little, a lot, or not at all, psychotherapy is another thing for you to try. When effort is expended by both the client and the therapist, psychotherapy yields good outcomes.

What if we don’t connect?

Knowing who you click with is a strength. Referrals can be made to increase the likelihood of a good fit. Therapists who expect to be universally admired by everyone need therapy. Sometimes, however, the best and most productive therapeutic relationships grow from working through differences in personality and style.

Do I need someone who specializes in my particular kind of problem(s)?

Maybe. I’m a generalist. I read and study and work daily to increase my knowledge base about how to do psychotherapy. That has been useful to a lot of clients with a wide variety of issues.  But we’ll look at your particular situation. Referrals to a specialist can be made if required.

How do I get started?

Call 567-202-0690. I have confidential voice mail and, if I’m not able to pick up, leave a message. I’ll return your call within one business day. We’ll talk briefly about what help is needed, or you can save that for the first session. I’ll ask if you intend to access insurance or pay out-of pocket. We’ll schedule an appointment. You’ll arrive at your fist session about ten minutes early to fill out some very brief paperwork and we’ll begin.
